The PSAT exam for juniors happens October 1st to 30th. Scoring top 1% in your state makes you eligible for a national scholarship. Qualifying scorers become National Merit Semifinalists. After submitting an application (essay + activities list), you may be selected as a National Merit Finalist. Those who are also selected for the $2,500/year college scholarship are named National Merit Scholars. Many universities offer notable scholarships for Merit Scholars, Finalists, and Semifinalists.
